Akela has been contracted by Lamor Corporation PLC for support in Saudi Arabia to strengthen their oil spill response capabilities within the Red Sea area. The task involves resource assessment, contingency planning, responder resource training, as well as marine and aviation asset management.
Lamor is offering crucial help in meeting the region’s environmental protection goals with spectacular coral reefs and dense mangrove swamps that transition to sandy valleys and jagged mountain peaks along the Red Sea coast.

According to Rune Högström, Lamor Head of Oil Spill Response: “It has always been a pleasure working with Pekka and Akela. We started in 2005 with EMSA vessel availability contracts on the Baltic Sea and Atlantic. Following that was the success on delivering Oil Pollution Response equipment and vessel pre-fitting support to the EMSA contractors providing us with several large scale projects year-after-year for a whole decade. Today we have Akela providing us with good advise and support in Saudi-Arabia, not to mention Akela kitchen – Pekka’s cooking skills have greatly improved over the years”
The Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest sea routes, has an extensive pristine coastline which could suffer irreparable damage from a major oil spill. Consequently, NCEC and the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture have collaborated with Lamor to enhance the region’s response capabilities. With Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector growing faster than ever, environmental protection is now a top priority.

The resources include three bases, five oil spill response vessels and three aircraft stationed along the Red Sea coast. These are supported by personnel and OSR equipment on standby, ready to respond to emergencies. Under the supervision of NCEC, Lamor promptly responded to oil spills in the Red Sea, conducted marine environmental surveys and took part in national exercises and drills within the area.
Additionally, Lamor has trained over 1,100 local experts and responders, with plans to train more than 2,000, from high-level national leaders to local responders.
